Web design style: Gothic organic

General description
The Gothic organic style combines elements of grunge with the organic effects of art nouveau.
Important features
- use of human forms and other organic shapes and textures
- intricacy and ‘overblown’ effects reminiscent of Gothic architecture
- strives to engage the senses rather than just providing a background
When it was fashionable
‘Gothic organic’ style was first documented in 2001, but it has never been more than a niche web design style.
What inspires the style
The style is inspired by ‘real life’, seeking to create a symbolic representation of the real world. It also borrows elements from Grunge and Collage styles.
How the style has changed over time
Gothic organic started out as a static style, carrying over from its origins in print media. Over time it has grown to include animations, sounds and moving textures.
How technology has caused the style to change
Technology such as Flash and Javascript has had a big impact on this style, allowing it to become much more immersive through the use of animation and sound.

Additional notes
I fully expect some dispute over whether or not this is a valid web design style. After all, I only have a couple of examples and my references all trace back to one man… If anyone has other examples of this style, links to more resources or would like to suggest changes to the definition, please do so.
By the way, while this might be an underused web design style a brief perusal of the hard rock/heavy metal section at your local music shop will probably turn up a fair few examples on album covers. I’m not going to list all my favourite Gothic/doom bands here – just do an image search for ‘doom metal’ or ‘gothic metal’ in your favourite search engine…
