Web design style: grunge

General description
Grunge is a design style that gives web designs a more organic look and feel. It is characterised by organic and dirty textures, uneven edges and graphics with a worn and faded look. It is inspired by the architecture and scenery of the urban/industrial environment. The style is often applied subtly to soften the look of a page or to deliberately step away from the glossy ‘Web 2.0’ style.
Important features
- organic textures
- ‘low fi’ print effects
- irregular lines
- a combination of muted organic colours and spectrum colours
- effects like stains, graffiti and ‘doodling’
- dirty, irregular and sometimes crooked elements
- worn, faded or aged look.
When it was fashionable
Grunge emerged as a web design style in 2008 as designers started to move away from the use and abuse of ‘Web 2.0’.
What inspires the style
‘Grunge’ is inspired by the urban and industrial environment, using the organic and dirty textures and effects that can be seen every day.
How the style has changed over time
At its beginning, ‘grunge’ was heavily influenced by the print-based design industry. David Carson, a graphic designer credited with the creation of ‘grunge typography’ was one of the biggest influences. Grunge for the web quickly became softer and less dominating, fading into the background and underlying the development of several other styles like hand-drawn, Gothic organic, scrapbook and collage.
How technology has caused the style to change
Technology has not yet had a big influence over grunge-based design. In the future as PNG support in browsers is more guaranteed, the style is likely to make use of transparency. CSS3 effects such as layered background images are also likely to allow changes to the style. Font embedding will also make changes as Grunge effects can easily be applied without compromising SEO.
