Web design style: industrial

General description
Industrial style design emphasises sharp lines, abrupt connections and dynamic interactions of motion. It relies on the viewer seeing the individual parts as a team of components working together rather than seeing the overall design as a singular item. The elements can be either cutting-edge (for example carbon fibre or stealth-look) or they can be derived from industrial use (such as textures from inside a working factory). It also borrows elements from other styles such as minimalism and ‘web 2.0’ as well as employing unusual grid layouts.
Important features
- use of industrial materials for textures e.g. carbon fibre, brushed metal, painted surfaces
- appearance of real-life objects that would be found in an industrial environment
- lacks the ‘dirtiness’ of grunge – industrial textures may look work-worn but will not usually show signs of decay
- similar use of gradients and shadows to the style commonly known as ‘web 2.0’
When it was fashionable
Industrial style seems to have been around since the early 2000s and since then it has been constantly changing and evolving.
What inspires the style
Industrial web design is inpsired by real-life objects like high-end supercars (for example the Ferrari Enzo and the Lamborghini Reventon), watch designs, new technology such as carbon fibre, light-emitting diodes, and the Deconstructivist architectural style. Other inspirations include the anime/manga Mecha genre and moves such as the Matrix series.
How the style has changed over time
The Industrial style changes constantly along with the real-life technology that inspires it. New materials make their appearance in this style at the same time as or even slightly before they go into widespread real-life use.
The Industrial style has also evolved from grunge/urban styles, replacing organic textures with sleek, modern materials.
How technology has caused the style to change
Web technology has not had a dramatic effect on the evolution of this style, but as mentioned above this style changes every time new materials and products are created.

The closest I could find to an expression of this style, it has a layout similar to magazine-style (that’s next post) as well as metallic backgrounds and some interesting glow effects.
Colorstream
Cool carbon fibre effects and a layout focused on a new piece of technology. Not strictly industrial style, but some of the elements are there.
