General description
Real-life web design is usually Flash-based and uses the metaphor of moving around a room or other space to deliver information. The interface resembles the real world and focuses on using real objects for their natural purpose to reduce the learning curve for new users.
Important features
- intuitive interface
- use of real-life objects for an equivalent purpose in the interface
- usually based on Flash or Javascript
- often includes ambient music or sound
- relies heavily on the user seeing and understanding the metaphor
- has some accessibility issues
When it was fashionable
The real-life style of web design is not really ‘fashionable’ as it is mainly used for niche websites such as art galleries. In this area, though, it has been popular since the introduction of Flash-based websites and was particularly popular in 2008/2009. The style has recently fallen out of favour, with many sites listed as examples of this style now updated to simpler minimalist or corporate style interfaces.
What inspires the style
The style is inspired by real life environments such as a building, a room or a piece of furniture. Designers using this style will usually develop their concept based on their client’s physical environment.
How the style has changed over time
The real-life style has always been as varied as the world itself, so there have not really been any time-related changes.
How technology has caused the style to change
Changes to technology have allowed this style to become much more accessible through use of Javascript and similar methods. The style has also been favourably influenced by improvements to web browsers and available bandwidth.
